Building a Better Community, One Family at a Time

Youth Leadership Development Institute

The Youth Leadership Development Institute was established ten years ago to provide leadership development, job shadowing, and employment opportunities for youth ages 14 to 19 in South Carolina. Currently the program serves approximately 50 students in Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties and 400 youth statewide.

Through the Institute, clients attend a weeklong job training camp to prepare them for a five-week job shadowing experience. During the camp they learn skills related to financial literacy, money management, workplace etiquette, personal grooming, anger management, conflict resolution, healthy choices, pregnancy prevention and teamwork. Once they successfully complete the summer job camp, participants spend the next five weeks at a work site and are paid a stipend for their participation. Participants also attend quarterly workshops throughout the year. This program targets children in foster care and other South Carolina Department of Social Services clients.
