Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

The CTUL's VITA program, in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and other local agencies provides free tax preparation and assistance to low to moderate-income individuals and families. By applying personal asset building tools, we are able to assist clients in developing strategies to better manage their financial resources and move toward greater financial independence. The VITA program served nearly 3,000 clients during the 2010-tax season with a total refund amount of more than $2.7 million. WHAT IS VITA?

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program is an economic stability program that provides free tax preparation and electronic filing services to eligible individuals and families at locations throughout the tri-county area. The purpose of this program is to provide not only free tax preparation and electronic filing services, but to increase awareness of the Earned Income Tax Credit as well as other asset building opportunities available to individuals within our communities?

HOW DO I FIND A VITA TAX SITE?

HOW DO I KNOW IF I QUALIFY?

The VITA program provides FREE income tax services for low to moderate income individuals and families in Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties. If your gross income for 2011 was $50,000 or less you qualify for free federal and state income tax services.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO MY APPOINTMENT?

1) Tax information such as form W-2, 1099 and any other income documents

2) Social Security cards or ITIN letters for you and all other persons on your tax return

3) Proof of identity such as a drivers license or other picture ID

WILL YOU FILE MY RETURN OR DO I DO IT MYSELF?

Our VITA volunteers will e-file (electronically file) your tax return with the IRS & with the state treasury. Or if you prefer, we will give you a print copy to mail to the IRS and your state treasury.

IF I QUALIFY FOR A REFUND MAY I GET DIRECT DEPOSIT?

Yes, if you provide a deposit slip for your bank with the routing number and account number.
